SatData for backpackers and travel guides – staying reachable far beyond civilization
Backpackers, mountain guides, and expedition leaders take people to places where there is no mobile coverage: deep jungle, mountain regions, deserts, polar regions, or remote islands. It is precisely there that an emergency situation can become life-threatening if there is no way to make a call or send a message. SatData uses Starlink to stay online even far from civilization. With our compact, portable systems, you can make calls, send messages, and call for help via data connections like WhatsApp – even where traditional mobile networks do not work.
Always connected, even where there is no mobile coverage.
Backpackers and tour guides often rely on their smartphone and local SIM card. That works fine in cities and villages, but becomes unusable as soon as you travel really far. SatData ensures that even there:
- You can send messages via WhatsApp, Signal, email, and other apps
- can send emergency calls and location data
- you can download route information, weather data and maps
- can stay in contact with home, travel agency, or mountain rescue
With a compact Starlink-based SatData set, you are no longer dependent on the nearest cell tower, but use a satellite connection that offers worldwide coverage.
Specially designed for backpackers and travel guides
Lightweight, portable and robust
The SatData set for backpackers and travel guides is designed to be carried in a backpack, 4x4, or expedition crate. Compact, shock-resistant, and weather-resistant. You can set up the system at camp, in a hut, or at a safe spot along the route.
Worldwide coverage with Starlink
By using Starlink, you have a broadband connection in places where there is no traditional mobile internet. With this, you can:
- making WhatsApp voice calls
- Sharing locations with coordinates
- Send photos and short videos
- Download essential updates (e.g. weather, route, warnings)
Replaceable batteries that are allowed on the plane
For backpackers and tour guides, flying with equipment is a point of concern. Therefore, the energy side of SatData is specifically tailored to this.
4Ah replaceable batteries
We supply the SatData set as standard with 2x interchangeable 4Ah batteries that meet the limits for air travel as hand luggage. They are compact, lightweight, and easy to swap. You can take multiple batteries with you, so you always have a spare on hand during multi-day trips.
- Switchable in seconds
- Can be charged separately or in the SatData itself
- Ideal for long treks and expeditions
- Easy to carry spare batteries, fits in any backpack.
We usually advise travelers and guides to use these interchangeable batteries, because with an extra set you always have backup power with you.
“Our 18V ProCORE 4Ah (approx. 72 Wh) batteries fall well below the 100 Wh limit of the IATA and EASA guidelines and may be carried in hand luggage as separate lithium-ion batteries by most airlines, provided the terminals are properly covered and the specific rules of the airline are followed.”
Vaste LiFePO4‑accu 8Ah, 12V – 99,8 Wh
In addition to the interchangeable batteries, there is a compact 8Ah (12V) LFP (LiFePO4) battery with an energy content of 99.8 Wh. This value is just below the commonly used limit of 100 Wh, meaning the battery can be taken as hand luggage – subject to the airline's conditions.
This fixed LiFePO4 battery is ideal for guides and professionals who:
- Want to run autonomously on one battery for a little longer
- Wanting to have a fixed energy source in a backpack, jeep, or boat
- Want to stay within aviation hand luggage rules
Smart charging: at home, on the go, and in the field
A good solution stands or falls with energy management. SatData is therefore equipped with its own charging solutions that are directly tailored to real-world use.
Charging at 110V/230V to 18V – batteries remain in the SatData
With our own chargers, you can connect the SatData directly to 110V/230V mains voltage (for example, in a lodge, hotel, or cabin). The charger converts this to 18V and charges the internal batteries while you use the system as usual. The batteries remain in the SatData and are charged automatically.
Advantages:
- You can continue using the system while the batteries are charging.
- You always leave in the morning with fully charged batteries.
- No separate chargers or complicated cables needed
Charging from 12V/24V sources – vehicle or boat
On the go, you can easily charge the SatData from a vehicle or vessel:
12V/24V to 18V: for charging the SatData batteries while driving or boating
12V/24V to 12V for LFP batteries: for fixed LFP batteries that you want to recharge in a vehicle or boat while the system remains active.
This way you can:
- Loading into the 4x4 off-road vehicle, boat, or bus during travel
- Maintaining the batteries on a safari vehicle, expedition ship, or escort truck
- Continue working on-site while the system is being powered and charged.
Safety and reliability for serious travel
SatData for backpackers and travel guides is designed for situations where accessibility is not a secondary concern, but a safety component. Therefore:
- We use reliable, proven components
- Are all systems tested as a whole before delivery?
- Is the electronics protected against moisture, dust, and mechanical stress?
- Are the energy solutions aligned with the usage reality of travel and flying?
